Development Chenango Corporation Helps to Re-Open Historic Landmark

The Sherwood Group, LLC Brings Historic Greene Landmark Back to Life

The Development Chenango Corporation (DCC), the Economic Development arm of Chenango County and part of Commerce Chenango, Inc. recently provided The Sherwood Group, LLC with funding for renovations at The Sherwood Hotel, 25 Genesee Street in Greene, NY.

DCC Executive Director and Commerce Chenango President & CEO, Kerri Green said, “The Development Chenango Corporation is proud to help bring back life to this amazing landmark in the Village of Greene. The Sherwood Hotel & Restaurant will provide jobs, will fill a gap in terms of overnight accommodations, and will help draw businesses and travelers to Greene, NY. We wish Mike and his family the best as they work to reopen The Sherwood Hotel later this summer.”

The Sherwood is a historic hotel, restaurant, and bar prominently located in downtown Greene. The hotel has been a cornerstone of the local community for over 200 years. The Sherwood will serve an unmet need in the community for a hotel, fine dining, banquets, and meetings.

The Sherwood’s earliest predecessor was Wattle’s Tavern, built in 1803. Wattle’s Tavern provided meals and rooms for the frontier town. On March 28, 1905, a fire destroyed the building. In 1912, the hotel was re-built by the Chenango Hotel Company but it never opened. The Sherwood, named after John H. Sherwood, was one of the first trustees of Greene when it became an incorporated village in 1842. The Sherwood Hotel has its grand opening on May 1, 1913. Since then, multiple owners have owned and operated it.

New owner, Mike LaCroce said, “We are very excited about this opportunity that was only feasible with the help of the Development Chenango loan program through Commerce Chenango. We hope to begin a soft opening in late August and work on bringing this Chenango County landmark back to life.” The team will include Damien Sutton (Executive Chef), Kyle Fuller (Director of Hospitality), Hunter Stevens (Director of Hospitality), and Mike.

A new loan opportunity for Chenango County businesses needing financial help amid the COVID-19 pandemic is also available. The loan funds, with a maximum amount of $25,000 per project, can be used to reopen your business, hire back employees, replenish your inventory, or for working capital. To apply for this funding or a BALF loan, call Kerri at 607.334.1400 for more information on the criteria required.

Development Chenango Corporation (DCC) is a 501(c)(3) partner organization of Commerce Chenango. Established as a local development corporation and public authority, which is Chenango County’s contract agency for economic development, it supports the economic development needs of Chenango County by providing area businesses with the resources they need to grow.
